Mondays

Mondays are terrible. Of course, that can lead to a debate with Hurd over whether or not Tuesdays are worse than Mondays. But from my perspective right now, Mondays are terrible.

Play by play of the day:

Math SL reivew this morning before school with Conway. A grand total of 4 people showed up. It was pretty amazing. And for some reason, I seemed to actually understand the material. Which is pretty weird.

Band was band. Other than the weird tofu-meat comment Benson made, nothing exciting happened.

HOA: We took a test. Multiple choice and short answer. On the 1950s. The end.

English: Basically, Pedro Paramo has me confused beyond belief. And Caulfield isn't exactly helping too much since this is a very open interpretation book. So we can say whatever we want as long as we have proof. Which makes things very confusing.

TOK: We went over our CAS hours and the beginnings of the Extended Essay. In other words: boring.

Lunch- First thing I did was drop off M&Ms to HC and give my congrats on having 3 vocalists make it. And of course, she was in a terrific mood (nice change) and very excited about that. And she said that me being the only one to get in last year as a fluke and that this is the way things should be. I then went and ate part of my lunch, then bugged Benson to let me see my score sheet, which he swore he didn't have. (HC told me she had put them in his mailbox). The comments were good and there was some constructive criticism. Then I went to the bandroom and talked with Eleanor about All-State and whatnot.

Spanish- My head is still swimming from that grammar lesson. Ick!

Music- I basically love this class. We listened to music (gasp!) and marty entertained us with his interpretations of the music. And he threw pens and shoes at Beth, and I got yelled at. Go figure. Beth was building forts out of my pens. We listened to the Romeo and Juliet overture which has a really famous love theme, during which Kayla and I "nearly cried" and Benson and HC were *gasp* nice to each other for a few seconds. Then the feud started, which was funny since HC has a letter opener in her desk. No threats were made of course.

Lessons- I actually had a lesson with Benson. Between my college visits, snow days, vacation and Benson cutting his fingers open, I couldn't remember the last time I had a lesson with him. So we went over my score sheet (again) and then talked about clarinet music I should be taking a look at. And now we're working on an arrangement of Weber's Second Concerto. Which he had me sight read. Which I couldn't do. Since I stink at sightreading complex rhythms.

Math SL- Our poor, poor, student teacher. Conway keeps leaving for lacrosse games, so she has to teach us. Today she said "Okay, I will give a candy bar to anyone who can teach me any of this. I haven't done vectors since I was a junior in high school. Which was long ago." We were supposed to cover 5 problems. We barely made it through one. But I do get a Snickers bar tomorrow!!

And we got our report cards today.

CONGRATS to Eleanor, Hannah and Peter on their amazing vocal auditions!! Their 100s save us from a year of HC being upset again. Also, nice job Kayla, Beth, Will, Walker, Marty, and everyone else who went to auditions!!

College Visit

Today was the college visit at Nazareth. It's a pretty nice school. The campus is nice and I like the community atmosphere. And they seem to have a solid music ed program. The only thing is that it isn't a Christian college, which is something I really want. And I've already fallen in love with Houghton, so that's probably where I'm going to go. Plus the fact their band director already wants me which should mean some good financial aid. And they've got sweet music facilities. And part of your tuition covers giving you a laptop. And I wouldn't have to take a ton of gym. And instead of taking math and science I'd take a 3 week course called "Physics of Sound" during the may term (it would be my only class). And everything on campus there is 5 min walking distance. Yay for laziness! (Besides, after IB I deserve to be lazy in college!)

After getting back from Naz, we went to Weggys to pick up some stuff for dinner and drinks for Youth Orchestra tomorrow. And we ran into 4 people we hadn't seen in a long time, so I had to tell people 4 times the same story of what grade I'm in, what I'm doing with my music, college plans, etc etc.

Tonight Mom is making chocolate chip cookies, which is great!

: D

So, after a week of totally freaking out, things finally have fallen into place.

I got a 100 on my All-State audition!!! Which is amazing!! I hope everyone else who goes tonight and tomorrow does a terrific job- it would be great to have a bunch of EHS kids get in this year. I am very thankful to God for my musical gift and for all the teachers who have annoyed me into practicing. Especially to HC for being flexible and really supportive (even in the midst of all her stress).

We finally got the CDs and parade music, so I can't wait to get into that! We're doing "What is Hp?" by Tower of Power. (I think I mentioned that in an earlier entry).

And Benson finally told me what next years field band show is going to be. "Sillouettes of Soul". All he knows right now is that it's going to some music by Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles in it. And I'm incredibly excited about that, since it seems like a really fun show to do, so hopefully we can be halfway decent for my senior year.

Crazy, Crazy Time

This is the first time I've gotten a chance to write even a short note. Or do anything that doesn't involve IB or Music. Here's what's been going on:

The 17th was the evening of my grandma's memorial service. We had some interesting problems with the music cds, but I could see her laughing at those. And everyone said I did a great job playing the piano....and they were surprised that I knew how to play. In the approx. 10 years I've been playing, that would be my first public performance (except music theory 1 last year) on the piano. And I'd like to thank all my terrific friends who came out to support me. And save me from random people and family members I didn't know.

Following the Virginia Tech tragety, everyone was worried about something similar happening in their own school; even at EHS. On the afternoon of the 18th, someone made a threatening phone call about doing "something" on Friday the 20th (Columbine, Hitler's Birthday). Thursday, 3rd period, we didn't have a teacher in our English class (not that uncommon having the IB coordinator for your English teacher). We didn't even have a sub. Thankfully, Baker was going in and out of the room, so she was there to check her e-mail when they asked teachers to do so. Of course, everyone in our class was totally freaking out, especially when she couldn't find a new e-mail after 3 tries. She finally found someone who told her we were on lockdown. Then when that period ended, apparently the lockdown ended and we went to 4th period. I had a dentist appointment scheduled for a little bit into 4th period, so until it was time for me to leave, I went to the band room (like that's a surprise). Well, I was in there talking to Benson when Tobia called a "modified lockdown" for the rest of the day. Wonderful. So after Benson finally was able to find the right number to call the right person to get me an escort out to the lobby, I waited nearly 10 minutes. I guess they weren't sure where to find me, and my dad had to tell them to check the band room. After that my parents decided to take me back to school to grab my stuff and then I was going to stay home the rest of the day and Friday. (This is due to all the losses in our family over break....my mom didn't want to take any chances). So I ended up getting a day and a half off from school. It ended up beign a prank. They caught the person, who is getting prosecuted right now and will get 1-4 years in jail. And I heard only 30% of the school showed up on Friday.

This past Monday I went on a campus visit to Roberts Wesleyan up in Rochester. It's a beautiful campus, and I liked a lot of the aspects of the college, but there was just something that didn't rub me quite the right way. I guess it's because 1) the campus is so big, so unlike Houghton it didn't have a family feel 2) they seemed to stress the liberal arts more than music 3) "Wesleyan" is actually more like free, united Methodist, which is great for summer camps, but not exactly what I'm looking for in a college. In the fall I'll be contacting RWC, as well as my other colleges, to set up a lesson with their clarinet professor, and that's probably going to be the deal breaker for me.

Then I had to leave early from my visit in order to be back to school around 4:15 to have a lesson w/ my clarinet teacher and HC (getting ready for All-State). Overall I'd say it went really well, minus the fact I'm in a constant state of freaking out about auditions and they keep trying to calm me down.

Tuesday was not the best day. Something to do with missing 2 1/2 days of school really throws you off. Started out with jazz band at 7 in the morning. I don't do improv on the sax that early in the morning. Honestly, I don't really remember how band went. Then I get to 2nd period and find out from Caitlin W that we had to present our English project on the last unit (that we had finished) and I didn't have my book. Thankfully, Caitlin did have her book, and I still had the notes, so everything went smoothly. In TOK we set deadlines for our various IB papers, which totally stressed me out. And caused me to work on my Copland essay with Benson during lunch. In Spanish we had a quiz which I wasn't ready for, but Senora told me to take anyway ("for practice"). Music class was fine since we just got a handout from Benson and started listening to a random piece of music. In Gym we went outside and got pummled in speedball (actually, Eleanor took most of it....and Hannah). Then in Math Conway wasn't there, so his student teacher tried to help us and ended up in an arguement with Hoffman which left me totally confused and with a major headache.

The good things from Tuesday?
The planning/venting session at the beginning part of lunch with Katie and Eleanor about band (with our planning skills, I'm sure we could take over the world)

The amazing job the 17 YEAR OLD (still don't believe that) did singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" on American Idol. It almost made me cry.

And the superb episode of House. It was great. If you missed it, I pity you. You can find it online someplace. But it was basically an amazing episode. Can't really describe it more than that.

Today was much better than Tuesday. In HOA we watched a bunch of hilarious "education" videos from 1950s. Then in English we argued about the meaning of Pedro Paramo. I've come to the conclusion that there is no meaning. 4th period HC and I worked on the All-State solo and talked about college prep and other geeky stuff. During lunch my pb&j sandwich was semi-frozen, so I didn't eat it. Then I talked with Benson about a bunch of different things regarding parade season, next years field band season, drum majoring and some other stuff. I think it was actually semi-productive. In Spanish we did some practice with gustar verbs. In IB Music I did the first full run of my solo. With a bad reed. Which meant I couldn't breathe. Which isn't good. Oxygen is very important. Benson started to talk over stuff with me, then Beth was ready to go. She did great, but then ran out with a distressed look on her face. So I went over to Benson to finish getting his review of my performance (this was counting as a make-up lesson) then HC came back and told us Beth was apparently sick to her stomach. I guess she got a really bad case of the nerves. After that we had a double period of Math, otherwise called, The-subject-I-remember-nothing-about-and-am-going-to-fail-the-exam. Plus we had a quiz, which we all decided we bombed.

Tomorrow I'm living at school. Jazz band sax sectional in the morning. School. Conducting lesson going no later than 3:25. Then clarinet lesson around 4ish.

PLEASE- If you are considering trying out for drum major- DO IT! If you don't want to commit by signing up, please let me (or Benson) know. If you can make it to a conducting lesson, that would be amazing. And if you're wondering what a drum major actually does (since no one watches us anyway), ask! You should join the most amazing section of the band!!!!

Snow Day....in April

This is one of those, "go figure" things. There would be a snow day to extend spring break. A nor'easter decided to come through and dump snow/rain on us and flood the east coast. I think our winter break had better weather than spring break. Welcome back from Mrytle Beach everyone!

Another note from the news: The Virginia Tech shooting. My heart goes out to all those who lost someone in the shooting or who are waiting to recover. In case you hadn't heard, the last check on CNN.com said at least 32 (plus the shooter makes 33) were killed and 29 wounded. And we can only pray that the numbers don't continue to rise.

Today I didn't do too much. I helped get some things ready for the memorial service tomorrow and picked up my room a bit. And watched a lot of House episodes. Yesterday evening I finished up all the CAS papers for the activities I've completed so far. And today (okay a few minutes ago) I did my "homework" for jazz band (writing out the notes for the solo cues). And that's about it for my action today.

Finally!

I think that word sums up my day: finally!

Finally I got some sleep last night. Which was excellent. Except the whole waking up around 8 this morning. And by one o'clock I had a terrible headache (caffeine withdrawl??).

Finally I took time to listen to some Copland music to work on my research paper. Granted, it wasn't all the music, and I didn't take notes and I was listening while walking the dog.

Finally I watched the Keeping Score DVD about Copland again and took down more notes, more general things this time about what to look for in his music that created "The American Sound". Once again, for the extended essay. (FYI- my question is "To what extent does the music of Aaron Copland created the "American Sound"?)

Finally I was able to find a book that contained the full score of Billy the Kid, 4 Dance Scenes from Rodeo and Appalachian Spring (full orchestra) all in one book for less than $100! In fact, it was $26.37 from Amazon.com. And I love them for that.

Finally I found some good practice reeds.

Finally I've gotten the ridiculously fast ending of my All-State solo to a managable level.

Okay, so basically a lot of band geeky stuff. But it was stuff that needed to be done. And I did it. Which is a very good thing.

Bring Me Up, Bring Me Down

I'm starting to remind myself of one of House's patients. The journalist who took caffeine pills during the day and then sleep medications at night. I haven't been sleeping well at all, and I['ve also been drinking more soda during the day. Hmmm....coincidence? I think not! So, as to the advice of my mom the nurse, I'm cutting out all caffeine after 4pm. Apparently you're supposed to stop caffeine intake approx. 6 hours before you want to go to sleep. Interesting.

Today was a bit of a shopping day. My family and I went to Jim's for lunch then went to the Olive Branch for a while. (Mom was trying to find memorial service music). Meanwhile, I got the latest Denver and the Mile High Orchestra CD (Big Band music) and the book "Me, Myself and Bob" It's the story of the guy who created VeggieTales-by the guy who made them. And it's really funny. Then we sorted through the construction and got up to Wally World. And I got one of those mini fans that sprays water. Because I've always wanted one. The only time I'll ever use it is to squirt Jenna during Band Camp. But that'll be worth it. But that wasn't the exciting purchase. Nor the bird seed, asprin, or toliet paper. No, it wasn't any of those. I GOT A NEW GOLDFISH! And it's soooo adorable! And very, VERY little compared to the other one, which is like 6 years old and probably near it's max. growth.

I also finished reading "Pedro Paramo" for English. And I don't understand it. And it's not on Sparknotes. Therefore, I am doomed.

Observation of the Day: Sloppy Joes are very sloppy. Hence the name.

New Blog. New Start.

Okay, I felt like starting up a new blog, just for the heck of it.

Spring Break? Define the term spring. I don't think "spring" includes the fact that we have a nor'easter coming this weekend.

As for "break", it's been a break because I've been too lazy to do everything that's hanging over my head. Still need to read Pedro Paramo for English. Have a TON of CAS paperwork to fill out by the end of the year. I did watch a DVD and do my plan of attack of the extended essay (senior thesis). And there's the TOK essay looming over my head (and I still don't understand what TOK is all about).

However, those are minor concerns compared to : ALL-STATE AUDITIONS COMING UP!!!!! Totally freaking out about that. Plus I have a Friday night time slot, which makes it harder to get a good score. Rawr.

Meanwhile, everyone is talking about and getting ready for prom. I have my dress and everything, and whether or not I get a date is about the least of my concerns right now.

Band wise, I'm really starting to get excited for parade season. And next year's field band season. The principals of each section of the Wind Ensemble did a recording of the parade music for the color guard (What Is Hip? by Tower of Power). It's definately going to take some work, but it has some potential. Plus, Benson says he wants to get the music down BEFORE we try to go outside and march. Hopefully that will make a difference. Even though there's no way we're going to win Colonial Days. And the spring concert is coming up May 7th. I like all the music we're playing- especially Chorale and Shaker Dance.

Finally, as some of you know, this week has been tough on my family. My mom's mother died, as well as her aunt and my goldfish died. (Last one is a little anticlimatic, I know). My grandma was the reason I became a musician in the first place. I owe it all to her. She made me take up piano, and made me practice everyday for a year before I got to decide if I wanted to stop. And by then, I didn't. She's also the one who made me take up a band instrument 3 years later and made me practice the clarinet everyday for a year before I got to decide if I wanted to quit. And of course, I didn't. She also urged me to go out for drum major. She was like a second mother to me. I'm going to miss her terribly. But I know she's in heaven with Jesus, and she can run and see now. Plus, she's probably craking jokes with her dad and singing to her heart's delight. The memorial service will be Tuesday night. And it's only going to be by the Lord's strength that we get through this time.

"And I know, you're dancing with the angels"
