I have very random thoughts. And I guess today was the culmination of everything I've been learning over this summer. I went to the dentist, and as usual, they ask if I've been flossing. Like the average American, I dread that question. "I've been doing so-so" I reply, not wanting to admit that I'm doing good if I floss once a week. I've always rationalized it to myself whenever I don't floss - it's too late at night and I need to get some sleep, or that I'll start tomorrow to get a good routine set in place. Then it hit me, while I'm sitting there having my teeth cleaned - there are no excuses for why I'm not flossing. It's simply a choice that I have to make every day. I can choose to floss, or I can choose not to floss. It's not complicated at all.
So I'm running errands after my appointment, and the song "Slow Fade" by Casting Crowns comes on the radio (lyrics will be posted at the bottom for those of you who aren't familiar with the song). And I realized, that Christianity is a choice. And this is something that I've slowly been learning this summer. Life is just a bunch of choices, one right after another. but instead of making the choices that I know I should make, I make the wrong choice, then proceed to rationalize it. Some people will tell you that it's rationalizing that keeps people from becoming Christians, but I think it's even worse among Christians. And I think it's because we keep holding ourselves to a crazy standard - perfection. Yes, we're supposed to strive to be like Christ, who is perfect, but we can't do it on our own. So instead of working towards that goal, we simply become comfortable where we are. Then, just like when the dentist asks about flossing, we squirm in our seat, and begin to rationalize everything. Christianity doesn't have to be as hard as we keep making it. God says that He can do everything, and that He'll do it all for us, so why not let Him take care of the work? It's just a choice.
Slow Fade - Casting Crowns
Be careful little eyes what you see
It's the second glance that ties your hands as darkness pulls the strings
Be careful little feet where you go
For it's the little feet behind you that are sure to follow
It's a slow fade when you give yourself away
It's a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid
When you give yourself away
People never crumble in a day
It's a slow fade, it's a slow fade
Be careful little ears what you hear
When flattery leads to compromise, the end is always near
Be careful little lips what you say
For empty words and promises lead broken hearts astray
It's a slow fade when you give yourself away
It's a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid
When you give yourself away
People never crumble in a day
The journey from your mind to your hands
Is shorter than you're thinking
Be careful if you think you stand
You just might be sinking
It's a slow fade when you give yourself away
It's a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid
When you give yourself away
People never crumble in a day
Daddies never crumble in a day
Families never crumble in a day
Oh be careful little eyes what see
Oh be careful little eyes what you see
For the Father up above is looking down in love
Oh be careful little eyes what you see
